In Word2007 links to excel do not automatially updae

I have a word document with links to fields in excel spreadsheets.

I've linked them using the copy/paste special/link command.

I've set the link optiion in workd to update links when the word document is
open, when printing & when saving.

However, none of the excel links update automatically.

When I open the word doc it asks if I want to update links -- I reply yes --
excel links DO NOT update.

If I go to prepare>edit link to files automatic button is checked but excel
links to not update.

If I click on each link and the update, they update correctly.

How in the blankety blank to I get these links to update when the word doc
file is opened???

Thanks for the response -- I'll check the two shooting tips a little later.

It makes no difference if the excel sheet is open or closed before loading
word.

In the document I have links to another word doc file and a visio file.
Bolth update correctly. It is only excel files that do not update.

Another thing I've noticed is when I go to Prepare>edit links, the excel
file type shows as Excel.Sheet.8, with the source file extension of .xlsx.
The link type is ----- Excel 97-2003 worksheet. After using "Update Now"
(which it does correctly) the file type changes to Worksheet

The link here is similar to
{ LINK Excel.Sheet.8 "D:\\My Documents\\Filename.xlsx" "Interest
2008!R20C12" \a \f 4 \h }
which prompts for an update
Try unchecking
Word Options > Advanced > Web Options > Files > Update Links on Save (though
why only Excel links should be affected I cannot say)

Graham,

I can get the link to update if I specify it is Microsoft Excel 2003;
however, shouldn't the link also work if I want it just to be formatted text?

If it is a link as discussed it should update. I cannot explain why yours
doesn't in this instance.
Have you tried testing with a similar link in a new blank document?
