In word, my selected text will not be replaced with new text

I select the text (which is then highlighted), and then I try to replace it
with new type, only my new type now goes at the front of the text to be
replaced, instead of replacing the original text. This just started happening
within the past week, and I need to know how to stop it.

In Tools > Options > Edit, check the box for "Typing replaces selection".
