In place upgrade (reinstallation) hangs

I tried to perform an in place upgrade also known as
reinstallation of Windows XP. However the installation
seize to continue during the Installing Network phase on
the fourth stage of installation known as "Installing
Windows". It just hangs and no messages appears. Would
the use of the recovery console be able to restart my PC
without destroying my precious files and folders. HELP!
