In Outlook 2003 all my emails and contacts have gone

I switched from Outlook Express to Outlook a month ago and imported my emails
and contacts from Outlook Express. I use Office 2007 but Outlook 2003.
Everything worked all right until yesterday when I tried to open Outlook and
got a message to say it could not open as a .pst file was missing. I kept
trying and when Outlook eventually opened all the emails and contacts were
missing. In My Documents I do have an Office Data File (.pst) which I cannot
open.
Is there anyway to retrieve the missing emails and contacts?

did you try opening the file from within Outlook? ie File | Open | Outlook
data file?

Yes, I did, but it only shows the same "folder" that is in My Documents
which, by the way, has the Microsoft Office 2007 logo beside it. When I click
that I simply open the blank 2003 Outlook. I shouldn't say blank, because I
can send and receive emails, which are stored. But nothing prior to 1 January
08 is in Outlook and I had hundreds of emails before they disappeared.

search your system for *.pst and make sure to include Hidden Files. The
try to open each from within Outlook. One of them will have your data if it
still exists.
