In Outlook 2000 on Tools tab, is "services" the same as "accounts"

I've just "inhereted" an older laptop at work and I'm trying to add a couple
of different accounts, including AOL. The instructions from both AOL and MS
re: doing this say:

1. Open Outlook. (If you receive a message to register Outlook as the
default manager for Mail, News, and Contacts, click Yes.
2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
3. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add and then click Mail.

But my Tools menu doesn't have an "accounts" option, only "services". I've
tried setting up using services, but don't see a "mailbox" in the folders and
don't receive any inbound mail.

Any thoughts?

You need to read up on the fact that there are 2 completely different
versions of Outlook 2000. Both Outlook 98 and 2000 come in 2 mail support
modes: Internet Mail Only (IMO) and Corporate/Workgroup (CW)

The answer is yes and no. Outlook 98 and 2000 allowed the end user to
install the program in a specific mode. To say that one is better than the
other is difficult because it boils down to more is what mode was best to
support Internet accounts (POP3/IMAP/SMTP) vs. Exchange.

So, Tools | Services means that Outlook was configured in
Corporate/Workgroup mode. This mode is *required* to support a connection
to Microsoft Exchange via the Microsoft Exchange transport (protocol). Many
3rd party addins to Outlook like to see it in this mode to operate because
this mode installs a feature that Internet Mail Only mode doesn't.

Tools | Accounts means that Outlook was configured in Internet Mail Only
mode. This mode is ideal to support multiple POP3/IMAP/SMTP accounts. The
account setup dialogs where near identical to Outlook Express and offered
the easiest upgrade path for the soho market to move to Microsoft Outlook
from Outlook Express and other Internet Email type applications like
Netscape, The Bat, .etc.

If you have the Office/Outlook 2000 cds, you might want to switch modes or
just learn a little more about the differences, see

This was VERY helpful -- thank you so much. I notice the article says that
"CW mode does not support IMAP" and of course, AOL is IMAP (which I'm sure is
why it's not working) and I have to be in Corporate / Workgroup (CW) mode.
Is there any "work-around" for that?

I have to stay in CW mode (corporately) -- is there any work around to
getting IMAP mail or do I have to upgrade to 2002?

Sorry, no. C/W cannot support IMAP.

Unfortunately your route is 3rd party IMAP provider (if you can find one) or
upgrade. If upgrading, go straight to Office/Outlook 2003. You will like
Office/Outlook 2003 much better than Office XP/Outlook 2002.
