In line frame problem

win xp / fp2003 / mozilla ~ internet explorer ~ yahoo browser / newbie

I have created a page that uses an inline frame. When the page is viewed in
browser window smaller than the depth of the content of the page (800x600 the
problem exists 1024 x 768 thr problem does not exist) a problem occurs.
When you click on a hyper link to view a section of the page that sits
behind the inline frame the page moves. It moves to point where the book mark
placed on the page viewed through the inline frame aligns itself with top of
the browser window. This problem occurs on different browsers.

If you visit the following URL:

and view in both sizes of browser window you can replicate the problem by
clicking on one of the colour swatches. The inline frame is located top left
– the page viewed via the inline frame is a HTML page.

That is normal. If the bookmarked content can not be seen in the current window opening, the page
will move the bookmark content to the top of the open window.

Can it be altered? I would prefer the page to remain in position as it the
action hides content I would prefer the visitor to see.

Your only solution is to use a frameset (with all its problems) rather
than an inline frame. This would require a major redesign of the page -
each "border" of the inline frame would now be a separate page in its
own frame, and would probably create more problems than it solves. Best
plan is to make the best of what you have - perhaps move the "must see"
items to left or right of the iFrame.

Thank you for advice. I wont go down the I frames route I am already at the
outer limits of my abilities! I was thinking about providing the visitor a
information note telling them to best view this website in a browser set to
1024 x 768 - i tried to find a way of adjusting my browser and could not
figure out how to do it -is it a browser command accessed via the browser
tools/menu or is the screen size resolution controlled by desk top settings
within windows. Or put another way what would you offer as a possible recco
for me to put in a note to my visitors.

Screen resolution is a Windows/OS thing, not changed through a browser,
and no-one will change their screen resolution to use a website. I open
my browsers at 800x600 with a screen resolution of 2560x1024. If a web
site I visit warrants it, I will adjust the browser opening.
One solution would be to use a fixed width layout that throws a
horizontal scrollbar if the browser is not wide enough, but there is
little you can do about the window height - even using a pop-up window
will not help if the user has IE7.

The browser size (in Windows and Linux) can be changed (if not in full
screen mode) by dragging the edge or corner of the browser window. If
already full screen, you can only make it smaller.
