Can anyone tell me, if I put my computer into hibernation
overnight, will the Broadband internet still be on? If
so, should I disable it before hibernating or unplug from
the phone socket, to make sure? Just don't want any
nasties infecting my computer! Have recently ordered
Broadband, still on dial-up at the moment.

If you have 'wake on lan' enabled in the BIOS then perhaps the computer could be connected to while in hibernation, causing it to come out of hibernation. But what keeps you from being attacked when the computer is not in hibernation? It's sort of futile to worry about hibernation if you are vulnerable at other times, I think. As cheap as routers are, you should consider purchasing and using one even if you only have one computer and do not need a local network, and use the NAT firewall of the router to mask your computer from the Internet. The bonus is if you ever add another computer, or have a guest with a laptop who wants to connect, it's easy to share the connection.

My HP Pavilion isn't connected to the Internet when my computer
hibernates. In fact I see briefly a message that "An Internet cable is
unplugged" when I come out of hibernation.

The interesting aspect is that before I installed SP2 my Pavilion
indicated that it didn't support hibernation -- no hibernation tab under
power options. Now it does, although I'm not sure that SP2 really had
anything to do with that.

Placing the computer in "Hibernation" writes the "ram contents" to a
file and shuts the computer OFF. When you press the power button the
computer "wakes up" by powering on, reading in the "hibernation file"
and if every device recovered, you pick up where you left off.
