IMs signing out during sleep?

I'm pretty new to Vista, and since using it, I've noticed that my instant
messengers sign out once Vista goes into sleep mode, but they sign in
automatically once I wake my PC back up. I guess this can be annoying if I
leave my cam on or if I'm expecting someone to leave a message etc.

While I quite like sleep mode, will disabling sleep stop my messengers
signing out when I'm away from my PC for extended periods (when I'm at work
for example)?

You're correct. In sleep mode, programs don't run, only basic power is
in the PC, allowing it to remember your settings so it can wake up
quickly and resume where you were. If you need your PC to remain on,
check your power settings and ensure that the sleep setting is never,
that will prevent the computer from sleeping while you're away. It will
obviously use more power doing it this way.

Thank you. I had my sleep settings set to Never last night to test it, but
it seems it's did not help at all. Perhaps I need to restart after changing
the settings?
