Impossible to read message at startup

The normal Welcome screen appears.
Trying to log in gives some sort of Error-message which I can read, but
don't understand.
All the text is somthing like Wingdings. Trying to start in a simpel mode ,
gives the same strange message. System recovery is impossible as well.
Starting in DOS-mode is OK. All the files are there - and I have a CD with
Kn*ppix- starts normal. Browser as well - else I couldn't write this .
Yes I know that I can install XP from my recovery-CD, but all the problems
after that ...... no thx. Any idee's ?
