Impossible Standby and impossible recovery from hibernation

Hi,
Recently my laptop (PCG700 model) cannot go on standby...in fact it starts
the process and then all of a sudden reboots, but the screen remains as
though it were on standby. Previously, while on standby, only a touch with
the keypads could recover the standby screen and the power light changed from
green to orange. But now the green light recovers after a spilt second change
to orange and mouse movements recover the standby screen. At the same time i
discovered that while on hibernation, the power button is useless even on
hold for several seconds. I only resume power when i take off the battery.
Can someone please help?

What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?
Also, you may have a hardware problem. Contact the laptop mftr.'s tech
support for help with that.
