importing video

we download video from our sony camera to the computer . when we import to
movie maker it will not play the video at all but the sound from video plays
just fine.

It is a sony digital handycam and it is a usb cable connection.
The best I can tell it is saved as mpg but how do i tell this for sure?
When i import the video to my computer it is thru the image mixer for sony
camera and does not give an option as to the file type to save it to.
