IMPORTING VIDEO FILES INTO MOVIEMAKER

I want to edit dvd sports contest in Moviemaker, but when I try to import the
video file into Moviemaker it says the file is not supported. I know it has
something to do with the file extension. What do I do? Mind you the dvd I
tried was a store bought regular movie.
