Importing Photos

I've tried the Import Photo utility in Vista Ultimate and seems to work ok
except it gives me no control over selection of photos to import from camera.

I recall in XP there was the Scanner/Imaging wizard that popped up with
thumbnails of all the photos on my DC when it was connected, and allowed me
to individually select pictures and tag them when importing. Is there such a
utility in Vista?

I have noticed that also. This is one of the things that I think it better done in XP than in Vista.

No, at least not from Microsoft. They really dropped the ball with this in
Vista.

The idea around the Photo Import Tool is to force the user to put all his or
her photos from a digital camera in a specific location, in this case,
"Pictures" folder which will then populate it in the Photo Gallery
application which you can then add key words to your photos to make them
easier to find. Of course, it does lack the user control aspect of what gets
imported, but the main aim it seems is to make things centralized and easier
to find. I personally prefer XP's Camera Wizard which allows me to import
what I want since I usually have a combination of new and old photos on the
camera.

As is often the case, concept is great, implementation is poor. Having said
that, they only need to add the function to be able to select your pictures
to import and the whole thing will be fine.

I tried Picasa 2 on XP and didn't really like it. I was more looking for a
built-in utility in Vista (like XP) and thought that I just couldn't navigate
to it. I guess it's just not there.

I'm not sure if free apps like IrfanView can do it, but I would have thought
some can. I used to use ACDSee, which has a lot of photo import options.
But now that I am using the Photoshop CS3 beta, it comes with Bridge CS3,
which is much improved, and I find myself just using that instead now, or
the Adove Lightroom beta, which is super-slick. But lightroom has no photo
import at present, as far as I can see.

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 that I use for editing but I had never
used
its Organiser and Photo Downloader that are built into it. Well I did last
night and I was pleasantly surprised at how elegant and simple its
interface
was, at the same time giving me all the control options I was looking for
too.

I think I might just stick with it.

Yes. From the free Lynda.com tutorials on the Photoshop CS3 beta, they say
that the new photo import function actually comes from Photoshop Elements..

I don't know of another utility in Vista to do that. I found the same thing
to be very annoying. I usually have a combination of pictures to import, and
without that feature it makes it way more difficult to import. Microsoft are
you listening? Think you can add that feature to service pack 1. Without it
the import feature is nearly useless.

I, too, import allot of pictures and shunt them off to different files for
storage and Vista's import feature is maddening. I think centralized viewing
of all pics on your computer will eventually be usefull but I want control
about where to import them. Even the drop down menu for file names used will
not display all the text. It's almost as if Vista is a "dumbed down" version
of XP!

to the folder of your choice. what could be easier?
