Importing pages and files from WWW to web

Hello,

I'm using Frontpage 2002 and I have a few problems with importing files to
my web. Everything works fine when I import from a location somewhere on my
harddisk, but when I try to import from a website on the WWW, things go
wrong. The program displays in a window that Frontpage is trying to connect
to the site, but then the little window disappears and nothing appears to
have been imported. What am I doing wrong?

First, if the remote server has the FP extensions, then DO NOT use the
import function, instead open the site directly on the server in FP via File
Menu | Open Web.

Second, if the remote server doesn't have the FP extensions, then you a FTP
application to access the site on the remote server, download the site
content to a folder on your HD, then open that folder in FP and publish it
to the correct location on your HD.

Hello,

Thanks for your information. I'll try it. Just a question though: why does
the import function offer a possibility to import from the web if it doesn't
work? I'm a teacher and I will get this question from my students.

Importing doesn't grab anything that isn't linked.

So, if you have includes or shared borders it won't import those files. It
will just grab the code on the page.

Which also means when you get the code down, you'll have to rework it to
take out the 'static' code and put back in the 'shared borders' and other
'design time' components.

The File Import (or Import a Web) uses the IE File Save As capability (in an automated way) to start w/ a home page and just follow
the client side links from that page
- it will not capture any server side pages or secure pages and will not include any unlinked page or FP SE information (navigation,
themes, include , shared borders etc)
- it is there to automate "capturing" any simple html pages (as you can w/ IE File Save as), or sites that do not use the FP SE or
have any _hidden / secure data
