Importing from DV Camcorder

Every time I try to import video from my Camcorder, WMM always locks up.
I've also tried other programs but they also lock up. It will import
anywhere from 2mins or less to around 7 to 10 minutes. What do I need to do
to fix this?

Make and model of camcorder?
Full pc specs
How do you connect cam to pc
What other apps have you tried
What file system does your hard drive use
What size is the hard drive
How much free space does it have
Does the whole pc lock up or just the video app
