importing contacts into a group

I want to import contacts from a file (.xls or .csv) into Outlook. But I want
to import them into a Group. I don't want them to show up interspersed in the
contacts already in the address book. Do I have to create the group in
Outlook first with no members? And then import the contacts from the file
into that group? Or what?
Need step by step directions. Thank for your help!!

Create a Contacts subfolder and import them into that.
You cannot import into a Distribution List.
