Importing BCM from another pc. All docs in Opportunities don't w

I have exported the BCM database from one pc and imported to another. Now
all the Word docs and Excel docs that were attached to the Opportunties are
not working. They are still listed, but when you click on them nothing
happens.

Any Ideas?

Dean,

When you link various documents to BCM items such as Business Contact or
Account Records, the attached documents remain in the original Windows file
folder location on your PC. BCM only stores the links to these documents.
The good news is that after you have imported your BCM db onto the other PC,
the links remain pointing to the attached document but the bad news is that
the links are now broken and will require you to re-attach each document
manually again to each respective BCM record. You will also of course need
to be sure that the involved documents stored within the Windows fle folders
on the old PC also get moved over onto the new PC so that they are available
to be relinked to BCM.

The BCM db does NOT contain any linked documents within the db itself. It
only contains the links.

Thank you for the response. Am I the only one that thinks that dumb. Why
bother letting a user export the data if it's not going to bring all the docs
with it. That just seems like a whole lot of work. Maybe the BCM will get
better as the months a years roll on. Is this maybe a planned upgrade in
future versions?

Thank again

There is a limit of 2GB in MSDE.

Most users are not prepared to backup a multi-GB SQL database anyway, so
storing files in a database would accomplish two things - 1. It would
drastically reduce contacts management capacity because attachments would
quickly reach the 2GB limitation. 2. SQL Server transaction logs would
rapidly get to a runaway size.

We do not recommend using MSDE as a file repository.

It is definitely not dumb, but BCM could at least popup a window advising
that this will happen.

Ok, fair enough, maybe its not dumb. I understand the logs would get out of
hand. Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way. I was hoping that once
exported, the Opportunity would become a "package" with everything kept
together, but your right that would exceed the 2GB max on the db. What if,
when the exported from Outlook it creates a zip like file that contains the
SQL data and everything else that was included in the Opportunity. Then you
could at least export it and import it somewhere else without having to go
find all the files that were attached to the Opportunity and copy them.
Maybe that's something they could include in future versions.

Thanks again for the reply

One solution to sharing document activities is to place the documents
on a common share and have all the BCM PCs mount that share with the
same name. That way a path to a document, which is what BCM stores for
the document activities, will be the same on every machine.
