Access Import & Link section grayed out MS Access 2010

Hello all,

Very first post here! I'm very new to MS Access and am working with a large database at work. I need to make a lot of changes and would like to import from MS Excel. Either import into an existing table in MS Access, or import into a new table in MS Access. However, everything under the Create tab ribbon is grayed out, AND the Import & Link section under the External Data tab is grayed out.

Any help is appreciated.

Update here: An employee has informed me that this might have to do with the version of Access I am running. I am running MS Access 2010, but said employee thinks these tables were created with Access 97. Is there a way to be able to still work in MS Access 2010 or MS Access 2013 with this database?
