Import Export gives ACT3.SAM

E

europeanonion

I have been having a lot of trouble with Office 2007/Vista Home Premium. I
have re-initialised my system.

The next step was to get rid of the trial version of office and student...
I then I re-installed my Office 2007.

Next I tried to re-import archives I had taken of contacts etc. When I tried
the Import I got a failure "An error occurred in the ACT3.SAM translator
while trying to attach a translator. Invalid SAM ID".

Posts elsewhere suggested the MSOCache file, a hidden file. Mine contains 10
items starting 901-20000.

What do you mean by "re-initialised"? Did you reinstall your Windows?

In what type of file are these "archives" stored? What do you men by
"re-import"? How did you "import" them the first time?

I exported by contacts, inbox, sentmessage et ceterra using the export
facility in Outlook. I chose the comma separated format (WINDOWS)I rebuilt my
system and required to re-import these files to populate the re-introduction
of the Outlook files and that's when I got the error "An error occurred in
the ACT3.SAM translator while trying to attach a translator. Invalid SAM ID".
What is Import and Export within Outlook for if not to produce this sort of
interaction?

It's there to export and import to and from other applications. For
example - to and from Excel.
The correct method of transferring your Outlook data from one Outlook to
another is posted here and on the other Outlook groups usually on a daily
basis.
All you need to do is to make a copy of your pst file with Outlook closed.

See here for more info:

And please quote the post you are replying to - most regular users here use
a newsreader rather than the clunky web interface...

This method is guaranteed to lose data. Export/import is never the correct
way to make backups of your Outlook data. Export and import are used when
moving data between Outlook and a non-Outlook application, never between
Outlook and Outlook. Do you export a Word document to plain text to move it
to another instance of Word? Of course not. You simply use the original DOC
file. So, too, with Outlook. See this:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm

Were I you, I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling the importers and exporters
with the Office entry in Add/Remove Programs.

Re: Import Export gives ACT3.SAM

Thank you for your information and your time. I actually exported my folders
to EXCEL comma seperated (WINDOWS) file and the files reside on a memory
stick. Since having so much trouble with Outlook (it calls installer
procedures every time I open it) I have switched to Windows Mail. I have been
able to import my contacts to WIndows Contacts but I would now like to import
some of my legacy data into sub-folders. Does that represent a problem or are
you strictly Outlook?

Perhaps I could address the install problem to you at some other time as I
really prefer Outlook 2007 to Windows Mail

I get the impression that no one around here suffers fools gladly. I'm sorry
for my imprecision.

Unfortunately I'm not a Windows Mail expert - I ditched it in favour of
Windows Live Mail even just for newsgroups!
I would think that you are going to have a hard time importing messages from
a CSV file...do you still have the original pst file available?

Certainly post a question concerning this here - there are many here far
more expert than I am!

Don't be - just remember that no-one here can see your computer! If you
remember that when posting you'll get on fine!

Discuss this in microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail

It's usually possible to resolve Outlook 2007 installation and configuation
issues here.

Some less than others, but it's always a good idea to search these newsgroups
and read aout how to use Outlook when faced with something you've not done
before. Using Google Groups to search these newsgroups for "how to backup
Outlook" would have found within seconds many of the references to which
Gordon refers.
