Import Excel List to Contacts

T

Tom

I have large Excel file that I use for a mailing list. I would like to
import this list into Outlook 2002. If I attempt this using the
Wizard, will all of the entries be entered into Contacts, as if I had
typed them all individually?

There are 300+ names so I am looking to avoid all that typing.

Is there anything that I would have to do to the Excel file to prepare
it for import?

All help appreciated
Thanks

Make sure that the data is in a named range. If you don't know how to do
that then just save the Excel file as a CSV file and import that.

Thanks for the info, but will that enter them into Contacts as if I
had typed them? Should I have a header row, does it need to be in a
particular format ie: (LastName, Firstname, etc...)

How does the import handle leading zero's in zip codes for example?

Thanks

Export a contacts folder into a CSV.
Place cursor into the A2 cell
Press Ctrl-Shift-End
Press del

This gives you an accurate template that will import properly. Paste
your existing data accordingly.

In Outlook create a dummy Contact and then export that to an Excel File.
Compare your file with that one and modify it accordingly.

Mail merge has no problem using an Excel spreadsheet as an address source.
Why bring it into Outlook?

If you really want to do that, see this:

I use mail merge when doing bulk mailing using Avery Address sheets,
however I sometimes need to send out individual labels that would be a
waste of using a whole sheet, so I bought a Dymo label writer which
encourages using Outlook.

When I import from Excel, should I be using a header row?
