Impact of compacting an outlook data file

I am thinking of compacting my archive data files. Will I still be able to
easily open them at a later date or will they uncompact each time (i.e. does
it operate like a zip file).

Compacting does not COMPRESS data files the way ZIP does - it merely removes
unused space between messages, making the file smaller. The advantage is
mainly in saving of disk space, with only a very slight gain in performance.

Also, archive PST files probably won't compact. Compacting only takes
place if large amounts of data has been deleted from a PST file.
