Images not displaying on website

What causes an image to appear blank on a website and have a small red cross
in the left hand corner?
It has only started doing it over the last few day's, and I just cannot
figure out the problem.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

In IE, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Multimedia section and make sure the box “Show Pictures†is
ticked.
