Shortcuts on Desktop Are Image Clips from the websites?

I've always created shortcuts from websites that appear as icons on my
desktop without a problem. Lately, the last two times I've done that, a
partial image from the website has appeared on my desktop and i can't remove
it. These images are large (1" x 4") and they overlay the other shortcut
icons on the desktop and I can't find a way to remove them. Left/Right
clicking on the images has no effect? I've tried to find a file through
START/EXPLORE/DESKTOP but no files appear to have been created for these
images? Any thoughts?

They have rudely set themselves as your 'active desktop'. Unlock the desk,
and remove the check from the page at:
Control Panel, Display, Desktop tab, "Customize Desktop" button, Web tab.
