Images do not load

Befuddled

I'm using Windows 98 and I just updated to IE6, SP1.
Since the update, many but NOT ALL web pages now display
placeholders (red X)instead of gif and jpg images.
Manually clicking "Show Picture" on placeholder always
makes image appear. ("Show graphics" is checked as "on").
In addition, I need to refresh pages several times as the
first web page instance sporadically yields "Page cannot
be displayed"; refreshing then makes page appear. Per
this newsgroup it may be KB article 817177 -- but I cannot
access the fix until it is released in a new Service
Pack? Is this true? Should I downgrade back to IE5.5?
Also, how can I reset file extensions gif and jpg to be
opened using IE in "Folder Options" in a foolproof
manner? Hacking around has not helped. Thanks to the
gurus in advance.

You may need to clear your TIF as you may have a corrupt file there.

Close all instances of OE and IE
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button, when prompted place a check in:
"Delete all offline content", click OK
Click the "Clear History" button, click OK.
Click the Settings button, adjust the TIF size to 50 mb, click OK

Possibly your cache folder is corrupt:

i have same problem also. and because my windows 98 came
pre-loaded, microsoft telephone tech basically told me
to "F" off. i also tried a hotfix file sent to me later by
microsoft. it gave me a popup stating that i am not using
IE 6.0 SP1, but i checked my internet properties and i
definitly am using it.
any help would be greatly appreciated!

I get the same popup, even though I have been dutifully
applying service packs and critical updates, and should be
up to snuff. Does anyone know how to get this hotfix to
recognize that you really do have IE 6.0 SP1 in place?
