Images appear corrupt or almost black

XP Pro SP1 all updates/drivers installed. In IE some of
the images (various types, .jpg .gif. bmp) display as
almost black images like they are being converted from 16
bit or higher to 256 or less colors. If I right click on
the image and choose properties, then close the
properties window some of the images will appear
correctly some still won't. This is also the case in
Windows itself like the monitor image in the settings tab
for the display in control panel. Any help would be
appreciated.

Did this just start happening? If so, what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't? Without that information (and
your system specs, video card, etc.), it's impossible to give more
specific help. If nothing changed - you didn't install new video
drivers, programs, etc. - then suggest you start troubleshooting by
swapping out your video card. Also check for overheating of the video
card and the cpu.
