Image pasted into Word document disappears

Hello, I'm having a problem with images that I've pasted into a Word
document disappearing when I page-up/down, or navigate to another
application (Alt-Tabbing) and return. The image is visible in
print-preview mode, and prints OK, but simply trying to view it within
the document shows only a blank area on the document page. Click in the
document where the image is pasted and the border shows up, but not the
image itself. If I place the cursor-control in the document, say a line
below the image, and then press the Backspace key (so the cursor-control
abuts the image) the picture reappears.
I was until recently using Windows NT on an old desktop, and did not
encounter this problem. I've subsequently upgraded to Windows XP on a
laptop, and the problem began then.
I've looked and looked for settings or preferences that might cause the
image to be hidden, but no luck.
Can anybody help me out here? Thanks.

Microsoft Word displays an outline instead of the picture.

Try this...
Open Word | Tools | Options | View tab | UNCheck: Picture placeholders |
Click OK

Picture placeholders
[[Displays an empty box in place of each graphic in your document. Increases
the speed at which you can scroll through and display a document that
contains many graphics.]]

This option is just to confuse people. ;-)

Thanks for your reply, Wes. The Picture Placeholders options was
already unchecked. But I checked it and then unchecked it (just to see
if that does anything) and I have managed to get partial images e.g.
the middle third of the image displayed but the top/bottom thirds are
blank.
Now interestingly, I tried right-clicking the image, selected the
Caption option, cancelled from that, and voila! the image redrew itself
and displayed correctly. But I then used the roller-wheel on the mouse
to scroll up and back, and that portion of the image that had been
scrolled-off the screen was blank upon return to the initial position.
Which suggests to me that there is a problem with the redraw
functionality.
