Is there a way to perform image backups with the XP software without having
to buy a third party product? If so, I'd also need to build a CD or floppy
with boot and information so I could restore the backup to the usual disk (C:
or boot disk) in the event of a failure.

Get Acronis True Image for Free Acronis is giving away an older version
(V7) of its imaging program. The only small downside here is you have to
register to get a serial number; a tiny price to pay to get a top product.
Once registered you need to login to download the software. The download
link is under "My Products" on the "My Account" page. Free promotion,
Windows 98 and later, 21.3MB.
Go to http://www.acronis.com/mag/vnu-ati7

Damn, and I had to pay for my copy when I got it. I'm still using
version 7. :)
