Hi Acronis Backup users

A low priced upgrade to version 9 is available for Acronis True Image
version 8 users at their website. It has a number of improvements in
particular faster restoration.

However be careful, if you order the download on line and pay for it, the
invoice does contain the unlock code and the key for version 8 does NOT
UNLOCK version 9.
So you have a hassle with Acronis to get the unlock code - I have not
managed yet. A pity because otherwise it is a very good product but they
have always been week on support.

To be absolutely clear, make sure you can see the serial number in the
invoice because if you cannot (as in my case) you cannot install the
upgrade!

Does the upgrade allow cloning of just one partition among many
on the source HD to a destination HD which already contains other
partitions? Not being able to do that was my primary gripe about
True Image. Casper XP does this currently, and its Tech Support
is prompt and thorough. Casper XP can be downloaded for a free
30-day trial from: www.FSSdev.com/products/casperxp/ .

Yes. Also permits imaging of individual folder and files. I have Casper XP
they complement one another because True Image bootable can be used if the
PC will not boot at all or added to BartPE

How did you find that? All I could see was a $29.99 upgrade, which
doesn't seem very "low" to me since the original was $49.99.

Does the new one natively support burning to CDs and DVD?
Supposedly that was going to be included, but I don't see anything
about it in the Web site.

Stan,

It certainly burns the bootable medium directly from the installation disk.
It is a big upgrade compared with the original version 8 but if you have
done all the patches in between it is a much smaller change, the main
difference being the GUI and the capability to image individual files and
folders.

Hi again, Uncle John:)
Concerning new features of ATI9 all of them require good test of
course.
But I noticed more interesting features:

file based backup (you said about it)
ability to work in still restoring system
ability to restore system by pressing F11 while booting without rescue
media
add new HDD wizard: allows to partition new HDD

That is all now I had time to check.

I am trying it out currently. It seems good.

One snag is that differential scheduled backups to an existing image on a
backup disk appear in the upgraded version However the task will not run
successfully until a new complete image has been created with the new
version. So I went three days thinking my schedule backup was running at
night but it was not and opening the scheduler revealed a file not found
message for the destination image.

Once new image created differential backups run OK. If I had not checked it
could have been a real bummer.
