I'm only able to save Word files as Wordpad

Word files I create or download are saved by my Gateway computer as Wordpad
files, not as Word. How can I change this so all Word files are saved as
Word files by default?

Hi there.

If you go to Tools/Options, then to the Save tab, at the bottom you'll see a
section titled Default Format. In it is a drop down menu next to the label
"Save Word files as:. Choose Word Document (*.doc) chosen there, then click
OK. (Word 2003 for sure, but probably good for 2007 also).

They are not changed as any such thing. What has happened is that the
Windows file association for DOC has been changed to WordPad. If the method
suggested by garfield doesn't fix it, select a document in Windows Explorer.
Right click and choose open with .... > choose program (don't pick from Word
from the list there) > pick winword.exe from the next dialog and check the
box 'always open with this application'
