buying XP-PRO $499.00 and the sound card that I bought SB
audigy EX platium 24 bit was suppose to work with XP-PRO

months of waiting ( back in 2001) the drivers are made 3
days later my mother board gave up the ghost. Sorry for
the intro BUT I NEEDED TO VENT. So I'll make this short.

Call phones to the companies, and get one to help you.

$500 XP PRO? $400 sound card? Not for nothing but you got
ripped off, just for future reference eBay.com it. Most
problems are pre=existing on systems and when you upgrade
the problems comes from the prior installation. Before you
or anyone upgrade their systems they should do a check for
viruses and spyware prior to upgrade.
I would suggest that if you are not very expirenced with
this OS that you hire someone locally to solve your issues.
In the long run you may save some money, You could have
bought a new system for less the $1000.

Try turning off your Caps lock.

The number needed for support isn't the 25 digit product key, but rather the
product ID that is generated for your Windows installation. (That's a bit
nasty of Microsoft: you must have a bootable installation of Windows to be
able to read the PID.)

Open the System control panel (or right click on "My Computer", and select
"properties"). The PID is displayed near the middle right of the pane, and
on my system it has the form xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx (20 digits total).

You can get the same information, plus a lot more, form the Help and Support
center. Launch it from the Start menu, click on "Use Tools to view your
computer information and diagnose problems", then "My Computer Information",
and finally "View a list of Microsoft software installed on this computer".
The PID for Windows is the top entry for me.

It's not clear why you're going to Microsoft support, though. You don't need
to be online to install XP, or even to activate it. (Telephone activation
takes 5 minutes in the USA; I don't know whether it's the same elsewhere. I
assume you're elsewhere, as the full retail price for XP Pro was $300 US.)
The drivers for the Ethernet card are best gotten from its maker, if the
card is too new for its drivers to be included with XP.

Good luck.

Address altered. Replace nkbob with bobkn.
