Hi,
I need more help on expanding a file from the WIN XP HOME CD,
referring to Microsoft Article 319095

The sndvol32.exe icon is not in my notification area, because it is
obviously corrupt. I asked for help on this venue, and was given a URL
which I went to, and I printed out the directions to copy it, (expand
it) from the WIN XPHOME CD.

Doesn't work because my 78 year old brain just can't understand the
directions?? Here's how far I got:

F:\ ENTER
i386 ENTER
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe ENTER

When I click the last ENTER, all seems to go well. My CD ROM starts
spinning but there is no light flashing on it and nothing happens and
the sdnvol is still not in the notification area.

I checked out I386 in my Windows folder, and sndvol32.exe is not
listed there! A corrupt XPHOME CD?

Could someone ease my frustration a little by walking me though this?

Thanks soooooo much!

Hi Mike,

First, have you checked to see if the setting is ON for showing the icon
in the system tray?

Go to Control Panel, Sounds & Audio Devices, and look at the Volume Tab,
in the center section, under the slider, and be sure that "Place volume
icon in the task bar" is checked. If not, then check it - that should do it.

If that does not work, report back and we can check to see if the
sndvol32.exe program is on your system.

Good question, Ron. . It didn't work so I substituted F: for CD

Thanks for you response!

Mike

The CD is a DOS command for Change Directory, not for the Compact Disk
drive.
It is part of the steps.

"CD\i386" means change to the i386 directory where the file you want is to
be found.

Mike

You start off ok with typing F:/ .. that takes you to the root directory of
the XP CD..

Now you have to type

cd i386

This will c(hange) d(irectory) to i386.. note the space between the command
and the directory

then you type your expand command..

Try it and come back and tell us how you gotten along..

Good luck..

Sorry folks, I didn't think about maintaining the same threads. I do so
now! I'm no longer in deep doo doo, but embarrassed instead!

Thanks to everyone that helped! I humbly appreciate it!

Now: as to the CDI 386, I thought I was supposed to substitute the CD
letter and so I entered F:\ i386 instead. Wierdly, it worked!!!When I
did go to CONTROL PANEL and check that line to add the icon into the
notification area....it worked! So, CD i386 or F:\i386, I lucked out
!!

I'm just thrilled to get all that help. I do pretty well on my own, but
my brain and my eyes want to give up. That's exactly why I fght back by
learning all about WIN XP. And it's working. Actually ,when I was 9
years old I knew how to add/subtract/multiply and divide in
BINARY...unheard of at that time. See what time does to the brain?
God Bless you all!
