Hi, using Windows XP(Home)SP2, IE7, OE6, Everything up to date. Below is an
excerpt from a message in this Windowsxp.general Newsgroup. You will notice
the illegible characters in the 3rd line. I get that in many of the messages
that are displayed from the microsoft.public newsgroups. Sometimes there
are many other words scrambled in this manner, in a message. Although its
happening in OE I could not tell if it would be an XP or OE problem. Does
anyone have any idea what could be causing the problem?
Thanks for any help.

Beat me. Thanks PA Bear! I gotta remember google groups.
Thunderbird seems to not search inside text. Its okay with
subject/sender but not body.

Newsreaders can't search the contents of messages (text) unless the message
has been downloaded.

You're just full of good info today! That's reasonable, how could it
if the data isn't there. Thanks. One more little mystery of life solved.

Sorry false alarm, could not duplicate and I know there were more then 1
instance but could not find any. I believe it was a problem originating
with flip's computer on his post.

Hi, thanks for replying. Better organized now.

2nd instance of illegible characters posted:

Newsgroup: microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general
Subject: www.discovercard.com
From: nofeer

I’m also having the same problem and have tried all the suggested fixes; I
also can’t connect to statefram.com. I can connect to both sites via my
other
2pc's running xp.
I also can’t update discover with ms money. WTF is going on?!?! Is MS goig
to pay our late fees or get off there butts and fix this!

Closing observation for my clarity: The original poster had UTF-8 selected
as his encodeing - I have Western European (Windows) selected under
encodeing. For newsgroup message viewing is this best? or is something else
being used by the more knowlegeable persons here? Thanks again for the help.

What you just posted here which I separated with ~~~~~~~~, You see that
often if someone creates a post in Word with Smart Quotes enabled and then
copies and pastes it into a newsgroup post.

Look at Tools, Options, Read, International Settings. Do you have the
box checked to use default encoding for all incoming messages? If so,
uncheck that. Then, if the message is in MIME format, OE will use the
same encoding that the sender used.

If the sender used Uuencode, then the message does not indicate what
encoding the sender used and you'll have to guess by trying different
options in Format, Encoding.

This is probably caused by the sender creating the message in Word and then
pasting it into OE.
