illegal qualified name character

Hello. How I am trying to open a file and I get a message that states
"illegal qualified name character". How can I retrieve the file?

Assuming this is a Word 2007 format document, does it give any further
detail, like where in the file the error is? Quite possibly it doesn't.
Regardless of that, does it give the option to try to recover the file after
the open failure?

Alternatively, try opening it with the "Open and repair" option from the
dropdown on the Open button in the File > Open dialogue.

Did you copy it off the external drive onto your local hard drive before
trying to open it?
