how do i open a doc that says illegal qualified name character

i have saved some work on a memory stick and now when i try to open it, a
message pops up saying : illegal qualified name character. how can i access
the work i have saved?

Copy the file from the memory stick to your hard drive before trying to open
it. (Opening files on and saving files directly to removable media is
surefire recipe for document corruption because of the way Word
creates/handles temporary files.)
