I have an illegal copy of xp on my computer but only because I couldn't find
my disk when I had a crash, loaded it and realised that the key is on the
side of my computer. the company whome I bought the system off is bankrupt so
wouldn't be able to get a disk from them. How would I change my key number
back to the legal one on the side of my system without having to reload
windows?

There are utilities that can change the key, Magic Jellybean Keyfinder is
one:

But that has limitations.
Are your installation and Product Key the same type?
OEM, Retail etc?
If they are different, they will not work.

Since you have the Product Key affixed to the side of the computer, it is
probably OEM.
As long as the CD used for the current installation is also OEM, there is a
fair chance you can change the key.
But you may still have problems activating.

The description of the Keyfinder says nothing about changing the key.
It says the Keyfinder can retrieve the key and copy it to the clipboard
or save it to a text file.
