If you change a filename extension, the file may become unusable.

Anybody else get hacked off like I do with this message appearing everytime
I change a file extension?

I just had to rename 20 files from .jpeg to .jpg extension and had to endure
this irritating warning every time - is there any way to turn it off?

Please don't tell me to turn on "hide extensions for known file types" -
that simply stops me being able to change the file extension at all.

Doing it from the command line is the fastest way and you won't be
pestered by silly popups. :-)
