if I try to backspace to make a correction, letters are being cut

It is a small but annoying problem. If auto correct is not on and I try to
backspace to make a correction, the text starts to be cut letter by letter.
Sometimes pressing "insert" helps, but not always.

Tools > Options > Editing (tab)
Check "Typing replaces selection"
