IExplorer 7 shuts down

Bev

I installed IExplorer 7 some time ago. It worked for a short while,
though following some links caused it to shut down. About a month ago
it stopped working altogether. I click the icon, the program begins
to open, the tool bars display, and as it tries to open whatever page
IE opens automatically (not my home page), it immediately shuts down.
I am able to see that it tries to open http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink"something",
switches to "run something" and then is gone.

I got to the download page through Firefox, reinstalled IE7, but
nothing has changed.

I don't mind going back to an older version, or just making this thing
work, but I need Explorer. Here and there there are pages that just
won't work with Firefox (yet).

Any help will be appreciated.
