IEEE cable transfer

I have an IEEE 1394 card for video capture on my desktop at home. (in
the system manager/hardware, this card shows also a "network adapter
function)
at the office, my next laptop will be equipped with a firewire ieee 1394
port.
will it be possible to plug the laptop on my desktop through the ieee
1394 link and to transfer files, or do i need to purchase a specific
software, or is there a solution to transfer files from the laptop to
the desktop through the ieee1394 link?
