IE7 "upgrade" again?

J

Jeff

Today, the yellow shield with exclamation appeared on my taskbar
informing me that there were upgrades ready for my XP system. I have my
Windows upgrades set to notify me but to let me decide what upgrades to
install. So far I have accepted all the critical upgrades except IE7
because I had problems with it and did not like it. When I went though
the windows upgrade screens I found that the upgrade it was telling me I
needed was IE7.

That surprised me because I had long ago set the IE7 upgrade as "hidden"
to "do not show me this one again". I reset it to that setting but am
wondering what happened that could have changed my preference setting.

Is there something different about this particular IE7 upgrade?

Has Microsoft changed its policy about upgrades and out options to
ignore them?

Or is it just one of these unexplainable things that happen from time to
time?

Thanks.

Yes, this is a new build of IE7. It's your choice whether to install it
or not.

1. Can it be uninstalled like the other IE7 thus restoring the IE6
installation?
2. Can it now be installed while keeping IE 6 installed and working till
I know whether I want it or not?

A1. Yes.
A2. No.

You'd hidden the old IE7 installer. While a new one was released ~04
Oct-07, it was temporarily not being offered as a High Priority Update via
AU/WU/MU, but it started being offered again late last week. If you don't
want to install it, simply Hide it again.

installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update. Make *certain* that you
check in at Windows Update immediately after installing IE7 and install any
critical updates offered. If Optional Updates category offers Root
Certificates update, I recommend installing it to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.]

Thank you for all the useful info. I will follow the links you provided
though I am in no hurry to go to IE7.

Same identical thing here. I declined previously due to past history of
many versions of IE having many problems. Version 5 even has not only
fixes, but also a 5.5 standalone version.

If you have dialup, for goodness sake, don't click the link for further
information. You'll be there awhile waiting for the webpage to paint out.
Don't say what is fixes over the previous IE 7.0 version. Just the hooplah
stuff. Maybe waiting another few months ain't a bad idea.

Manually downloaded the latest IE 7.0 version for XP... Not considering
installation for now.
