IE7 Program not Responding

Good day and thank you for reviewing this post.

I was installing a new HP computer with Vista Home Premium today. It was
going very well. IE7 was working; even did some downloads.

I then installed a Canon 8300F scanner, which installed fine with the
accompanying disk. Then I went to install the Canon software .. and here is
where I think I caused my own problem .. it told me there might be problems,
so I installed it anyway, expecting that if there were issues the install
would not have completed ... well it completed and I even ran the Canoscan
software and did some scans. So far, so good, I thought.

But then IE would not even turn on ... when I clicked the blue E, it
IMMEDIATELY went to a small Program not Woroking window and then said that it
would contact me if a solution was found.

Uh-oh. So I immediately went in an uninstalled each of the Canon programs,
including the driver itself.

No change.

Then i went to do a system restore to a point before the Canon install ...
it seemed to restore fine until it rebooted and then it told me there was an
error and it could not restore (Great, restore is so I can recover FROM
errors!!! LOL). I tried system restore again just in case I did something
wrong, and it gave me the same error.

SO I installed Mozilla and downloaded the Vista driver for the scanner and
the Vista-ready software and installed them. Scanner works fine.

Now here is where it gets weird ... I did some research on IE7 and Vista and
was directed to the RESTORE option in EI7 properties. I did the restore and
voila! I got IE7 to come up ... that screen with the "Save System
Properties" that IE7 gives you when it is new came up and then it switched
immediately to the default home page of HP-AOL. I tried hitting the back
arrow and it would give me that screen again, but before i could even hit a
button it jumped to the HP-AOL home page.

Problem solved, right? Not even! While this window was up and I was
surfing, I hit the blue E again... you guessed it, it went directly to the
error screen for IE saying there was a problem ... while I am looking right
at another IE7 window in front of me.

I closed the window I had up and hit the blue e. Error again.

I went to IE properties and hit Restore and again I get a crisp IE7 window
(With the aforementioned "save" screen followed by the HP-AOL screen)

Hit blue e, or close that window and I get the program error again.

I repeated this process 10 times just to make sure this was a solid symptom.
I could even use tabs while I had the IE7 window open. I just could not
open a new one or another one.

I have given you all the symptoms and when the error occured. PLEASE help
point me in the right direction. I will not see this machine again until
Friday afternoon, so I am limited in whatever tests I can try until then.

Thank you so very much for your time and expertise.

Shame that I got no replies on this crucial issue. However, through TechGuys
(http://forums.techguy.org) I got a reply that worked, so I will take the
time to let future problem folk know what fixed it.

I went to system tools and opened IE in safe mode. After that it worked
whether in safe mode or not.
