IE7 not displaying fonts correctly

This is not exactly an FP issue, but it is one I encountered yesterday after
upgrading to Internet Explorer 7. Comic Sans, the "web safe" font I use a
lot in my site, displayed quite poorly after the upgrade. After a lot of
work, I discovered that IE7, unlike IE6, automatically checks a feature
called ClearType, which is supposed to improve font appearances on LCD
monitors. I still use a CRT. To turn off this feature, go to "Tools",
"Internet Options", "Advanced" and under the MultiMedia section uncheck the
top box, "ClearType." This immediately fixed my poorly displaying Comic Sans
font.

I don't know that Comic Sans is a "web safe" font.

The term "web safe" in this context means, generally, that the majority of
users will have it on their system. If it is a display problem, it is
probably not associated with either FP or IE7. Maybe your graphics card
drivers need updating?

Could you post the URL so we can check if it is "just you" or a wider
problem.

The problem you have may not be something that everyone viewing your site
will experience.

It would be worthwhile posting in the Windows groups, or a group designated
to your brand of graphics card to see if they have any opinions on your
problem

Also post to the IE/IE 7 group(s) to see if they have experienced any
similar problems with IE 7 itself. IE7 is out of beta, so maybe downloading
the "release" version may help too.

Hi Andrew - The research I did listed Comic Sans as one of the eight "web
safe" fonts. In any event, turning off the ClearType feature instantly
improved the Comic Sans font on the hiking trip reports in my site:
http://www.allhikers.com on my CRT monitor to its previously good looks in
IE6. However, that may hurt people using an LCD monitor. Who knows.

When at my site, go to Hiking, Hiking Trip Reports, and click any hike, say
2006 Havasu Canyon, to get a better presentation of the font (and to see the
fabulously beautiful waterfalls of Havasu Canyon).

Comic Sans is not installed by default on Red Hat Linux, so Linux users
will see Times instead unless a font family is specified.
For this reason (regardless of what Microsoft says) Comic Sans is not a
web safe font.

Well, I can't see the OP's site which he says uses Comic Sans - I get
something completely different more like Times Roman - but I do have Comic
sans font on my system.

That's why I didn't state outright "Comic Sans is not a web safe font" I
said I *didn't know* if it was.

My other suggestion still stands - if it's not displaying for you correctly
your video card/drivers might need updating.

Other point: not everyone will know to turn off ClearType as you did

Does the problem occur with any other font e.g. Arial? That was also my
basis for the "web safe font" suggestion.

BTW your site comes up in Times New Roman, not Comic Sans MS on my system (I
have confirmed that I have Comic Sans on my system).


Using XP Pro, IE6, LCD 19" monitor.

IE3 (It didn't come with the OS, it was part of IE). It's also on every web
safe font list you can Google for so I'm not sure why you're saying it's not
web-safe. Ex:

Comic Sans is not part of the Red Hat 9 (or earlier) Linux distro, so I
regard the font as NOT web safe.

I'm not up on all the details of Linux. What Fonts come with Linux? What
browser does it use? Are there really a lot of home users out there buying
PCs with Linux installed that using Comic Sans on a web site would be that
big of an issue?

Thanks for the information! So then what about other fonts that are on
web-safe font lists like Times New Roman, Arial or Verdana? Wouldn't that
mean that mean Linux would have a hard time with most web sites?
