IE7 no longer works

As of this evening, like it did on XP, IE7 stopped working, locks up in
seconds of being opened, and Task Manager doesn't work to close it. It
cannot be closed once locked up. On XP we uninstalled it and went back to
IE6 which worked fine. Now I have to find out how to keep it from being the
default browser.

You got all kind of problems. You can't even drive nor do you know how
to trouble shoot or problem solve.

You are a mess, with constant whining.

Hey, maybe you surfed by a Web site, a Web site drive by occurred and
something installed itself silently

Or you *clicked* on something that silently installed itself like an
ACtiveX control not compatible with Vista or some kind of malware that
made it to the machine silently.

And now IE 7 is malfunctioning behind it, because you're user/admin out
there on the Internet just like you were before with XP. :p

If someone could find out how to keep you from being the default user
on that machine, it wouldn't be so screwed up.

Hello,

You may have a bad IE add-on installed causing this problem. This
tutorial will show you how to test for this and to reset IE7.

Thanks Shawn. I removed the HOSTS file I added to try and block all the ads
IE7 allows on webpages. That stopped the freezing. I'll be using
MozillaFF#3 but some websites wont work with Mozilla so having IE7 work is a
good thing. You would think someone would write an ad-blocker for IE as
they did Mozilla.

The "hosts" file someone recommended to block all the ads IE7 allows
apparently caused the problem. I removed them and the problem stopped.

That someone was a extremely knowledgeable person and your inquisition on the hosts file in that particular thread showed that you were going to mess up royally . And you sure did.

That's not the purpose of the Host file anyway to be blocking domain
names by using the loop back IP and some kind of block adds from domain
name junk. It's a blatant abuse of the Host file.

In addition to that, I doubt that IE would start failing due to what is
in a Host file. The two are not tied together in anyway internally.

However, there is a problem with using a Host file with that block add
junk in it that causes DNS look-ups to freeze on the Windows O/S.

As for Pop-up Blocker on IE7 on this Vista machine, it's working like a
champ.

All I want Peter is to get his computer to the point where I can get my work
done and have some fun afterward surfing and working on my personal
research. Eventually I think it will get to that point. Now that all the
software is installed, I turned UA back on. But now I can't get any sounds
to play. The PC is silent and the little speakers are missing from the
bottom tray. Any ideas what could be causing this?

No problem. I'll be using MozillaFF instead of IE7 most of the time.

Pop-ups were blocked and that was good. It was all the ads on some webpages
that were intolerable. On some pages it was hard to tell the ads from the
webpages themselves.

What does it say in Device Manager. Any yellow explanation marks

You had to ask, didn't you!? The bozo probably has a dozen of 'em in
there at this point. Get ready for more questions.
