IE7 links suddenly opening in new window instead of new tab

I'm using IE7 on XP Pro with all the latest updates.

Recently when I use the middle mouse button to open a link in a new tab it
opens up in a new window instead. Even if I right click and select 'Open in
new tab' it opens in a new window.

I checked Internet Options, Tabbed Browsing Settings and made sure I have
selected 'Open links in a new tab in the current window' selected.

Stopped and restarted windows.

Downloaded IE7 and re-installed.

Windows Defender says all is well.

Avast antivirus says all is well.

So far nothing has fixed problem. It's drivng me crazy enough to want to
switch to Mozilla.

Suggestions?

IE7 questions should be asked in the Internet Explorer newsgroup. There are
quite a few posts there so peruse them for something on topic before posting
a new message.
