IE7 closes unexpectantly when trying to view some pages

XP home IE7
Just recently IE7 will close suddenly when trying to view some pages (it
tends to happen with links or log ins within a website)
I have checked for Viruses (AVG 7.5), cleared my cache, and lowered the
security settings in IE.
I have also tried system restore, to no avail.

Your AutoComplete probably has something corrupt writtten to its encripted
entry in the registry.
Open IE, tools, options, Content Tab, AutoComplete button, Clear then turn
off auto-complete, Restart Windows, and turn it back on. You will lose all
saved passwords.

Thanks Mark,
I did as you suggested with a reboot ...no luck
My daughter told me it is also happening when she tries to access pages
through short cuts on the desktop
My daughters uni website has a link to her online studies on its website, no
password required, IE closes when clicking the link
I am getting rather desperate as uni studies commence next week and I am
thinking of uninstalling/reinstalling IE
Can I do that through add/remove windows components?
Do you think that might help?
Regards,
Jo

It's possible that you can just clear the IE cache to help the problem. IE,
tools menu, options, (include offline content)
Reinstalling IE depends on how you installed it. If you downloaded the IE 7
update, you can open Add/Remove in Control panel, and check the box to 'show
Updates" and take it out, then re-download it from the Windows Update site.

I cleared the cache (again!)
I then uninstalled IE7 updates and reinstalled as you described
then I got an error that KB920683 failed to install
Error message o x 8007010B
whilst trying to solve that problem I stumbled across Article ID 928426 titled
"Internet explorer 7 may exit immediately when it includes an add-on and you
start it in Windows XP"
so i started ie with add ons disabled
success, now I can get onto the sites I couldnt previously
But, how do I enable java for these websites when I can only access them
using IE with add ons disabled?

Try to Run the IE with Add-Ons Enabled and try to Disable them one at a time
and see which one is the culprit, either remove it or update the Plug-ins for
it.
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit or you can send them here in your next
post) and click [OK] to confirm your Changes.

Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down under the browsing option and uncheck
this box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Disable script Debugging (internet Explorer)
[ ] Disable Script Debugging (Other)
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) and click Apply
then OK to close your IE Properties.
