IE7 and Firefox: Can't load https:// website (bank)

For some strange reason about one week ago I suddenly started having
problems accessing my banks webpage, it's Scotiabank. The webpage will
start to come up but freeze. Clearing the cookies usually but not always
will solve the problem.

Is there any setting one of my kids might of inadvertently changed in Vista
that could cause this? Since IE7 and Firefox both exhibit the same behavoir
it must be something in Vista. The website in question works fine under XP
and XP64 my two other OSs.

In IE7, click on Tools - Internet Options
Go to the Advanced tab and scroll almost to the bottom and make sure that
'Use TLS 1.0" is not checked
Restart the browser and try to visit your bank website. This is a known
issue with IE7 and disabling TLS 1.0 is only a workaround, but does seem to
correct the issue in most cases.

TLS 1.0 doesn't seem to make any difference in IE7 or Firefox. I really
find it strange I had absolutely no problem for weeks.

Could be the bank is blocking you, some of the better financial
institutions do not allow the use of Beta Browsers or OSs to contact
their secure systems, banks here are currently taking steps to block
Vista Beta / IE7 because its a BETA FFS!

and furthermore

Using a Beta OS and a Beta Browser to conduct banking business
on-line?

Think about it then tell me if you think thats a such a great idea
weather it works or not.

FWIW I live and work in one of the worlds premiere offshore financial
centres and I would not touch on-line banking under any circumstances.
I will happily help clients set it up if thats what they want - for my
own accounts - no way.

Are you using a guest Account when you try logging into https:// sites? I had
the same problem until I tried using a Power User account.

Try running IE with no addons...click-Start-all programs-accessories-system
tools-Internet Explorer with no addons

I think Jonah has the right idea. For everyday banking I'm not afraid to
try a beta. Where I had problems was late one Friday afternoon. I was
watching a stock in real time to see if the days run up would continue when
suddenly I couldn't access the site. I could of lost some money but luckily
the run up continued onto the next trading day which is somewhat rare for a
Friday afternoon, Monday trading session.

None of this would of happened if I wasn't having problems with my non-beta
OSs. XP64 had been deleted by mistake and Xp was damaged beyond repair
which is rare. A once in a lifetime situation. Now I have Xp64 up and
running again to prevent that kind of occurence.

There is an agent string that resolves this issue.

Here is the agent string to permit IE7 to present itself as IE6 to your bank
or other institution. It is a regisry entry (approved by the IE7 beta
team). Set a SR point, unzip the file, and double click on it. It is not
necessary to reboot. Use Run as Admin if necessary.

If it works, use the Help/Send Feedback on the IE7 Menu (you may have to
Show Menu to see Help) to send the name of the institution to Microsoft so
that the IE7 Security team can work with the institution to ensure that IE7
will work in the future.

If you don't mind me asking, which bank is it that you are trying to access?
I assume from your name that you are Canadian (me too) . I know for sure
that the Bank of Montreal is working in Vista and IE7. I am 75% sure that
Scotia bank, and TD are also working but not 100%.
If it is a bank that any of my friends use, I'll ask around to see if they
are having problems.

Sorry for the double post, but make sure that 'use SSL 2.0' is checked in the
advanced internet options. It is off by default and has resolved some https
issues.

Did you try the agent string I posted in reply to FC just a few minutes ago?
It is a registry entry that is the attachment to my post.

Anyone get Scotiabank's website to work yet? I get the same problem, only
mine started as soon as I started testing the Vista beta...it never worked
from the get go. If i keep hitting refresh a few times I can get the login
screen to pop up...and 50% of the time I can log in and see my account
balances...but when I click to view the account transaciton details I get the
next screen with the top header and a blank main frame.

I've trie dthe ssl thing, spoofed IE7 for IE6 with the user agent string
switch as recommned here. I've even tried 4 or 5 different browsers and it
still won't connect. The same behavior for all of them. I guess it's
Scotiabank blocking the OS...it's gotta be. I'm gonna send them an email and
ask what the dillio is.

OK...so I emailed Scotia Bank's Online Banking question/answer group. I got
a canned answer reply that basically in "canned answer" terms said "That's
unfortunate. There should be no reason for the website not to work, beta or
not." ...then the email curtailed into offering me to sign up for their
Scotia Star Network Rewards Program(tm) ... WTF? If you can't give me a
real answer don't give out your email address. Man. So I'm still using my
other computer with XP to get my banking details...not a biggy...but I sure
hope Scotia Bank fixes this before the actual Vista release.

Signed,

Still Trying to Figure This Out

is your issue getting into your transactions? I found if you let it
load and then hit stop it will load the top part of the page. You
should be able to enter into the "Get Transaction Details for Current
Period" box and narrow down the period to something shorter.

My issue was getting to the link at the bottom for my MS Money
download - it would just hang without giving me the combo box at the
bottom. I found putting a date within the last 15 days days brings up
the completed page right away.

Yeah, my issue is getting transactions for my main bank account. Actually
even getting to the logon screen to start with is, at best, a crapshoot.
Sometimes it loads and sometimes no. If I do the stop, refresh trick it'll
load eventually. Upon getting logged in, my main banking home window
sometimes loads and sometimes does not...refreshing helps, but not always.
I've NEVER been able to "refresh" my way into my transaction log for any
account though. :(
