IE6; XP Secure Site Access - Henry Leboeuf

Henry you responded to my query of Nov 25 as follows. I
renamed the "hosts" file and tried your references.
However, the references are beyond my knowledge of
computer systems.

I have turned off Norton and Roxio.

I did not try the problem site "www.macquarie.com.au"
when I first received the computer BUT does it make sense
to wipe my hard disk, reload my software and start again
or is the problem likely to re-occur with a new install?
I have not had occasion to try other secure sites and so
I do not know how frequently the problem occurs.

Previous responses from you and then Frank follow:

Only that site?

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be
hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.

Cannot Open, Display, find - errors. Look for some clues
on this page.

I posted a problem accessing www.macquarie.com.au on Nov
17 and received a reply from Frank Saunders.

Frank, unfortunately after implementing each relevant
component of your recommendations I still cannot access
the site. Do you have any additional advice. Should I
clean my harddrive and reinstall Win XP and all my other
software?

I do appreciate you trying to help me out.

If you have a problem with only one site no need to reinstall.

I get to the front door of the Bank.

I supposed that you cannot get to your account.
What is the error message?
Under Help/About Internet Explorer what is your cipher strength?

Any firewall or security software that could block the site?

Henry,per your queries:
1. This is the only site that I have had a problem with -
I do not access any other financial sites.

2. Yes, I do have an account with the bank BUT more
importantly it is my on-line stock market trading account.

3. Even if I use Google's cache of the account to get to
the front page - I only see text and cannot enter my user
name etc. When I go directly I get the error
message "This Page cannot be displayed". I have
reproduced it in full at the end of this note.

4. Cipher strength is 128 bit

5. I use a Billion wireless ADSL Firewall Router with the
Firewall "DISABLED". It is a 256k broadband internet
connection - wireless for my old Win 98/IE6 laptop which
has no problem accessing the site and wired (ethernet)
connection for my new desktop which has the problem.

It is Billion Model no BIPAC-743 GE www.billion.com.au).
The following comment out of the Features may be
significant - BUT if my Win98/IE6 works ok then it ????
shouldn't be a problem with XP/IE6????

" Rich Packet Filtering:
Not only filters the packet based on IP address, but also
based on Port numbers. It will increase the performance
in LAN and WAN, also provides a higher-level security
control."

I have only installed Norton System Works with Roxio -
when both are disabled I still cannot access the site.

The error message is as follows:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.
The Web site might be experiencing technical
difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make
sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu,
and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab,
click Settings. The settings should match those provided
by your local area network (LAN) administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft
Windows can examine your network and automatically
discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
click Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the
Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to
determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your
Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu,
and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab,
scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL
2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

If this " Rich Packet Filtering:" is some web accelerator program then it
may be creating a hosts file. Open it with notepad and remove any reference
to your bank.

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.

Or this fix.

You Cannot Access Your MSN E-mail Account or Authenticate with a Web Site in
Various Programs
When you try to access your MSN e-mail account, you may receive the
following error message:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings... Cannot find server or DNS Error
You cannot successfully authenticate with a Web site in various programs
(for example, Windows Media Player). For example, you may be prompted for
your user name and your password several times, and you may receive the
error message that is described in this section or an other error message
from the Web site that indicates that you cannot access even after you type
the correct user name and password.
