IE6 won't surf, while OE6 is fine.

Well, it's been ages since I had a problem.

This one has me completely stumped.

4 days ago I was preparing to get rid of Earthlink, and go with PeoplePC. I
had had both programs loaded and operating after using the 1/2 price
options. Then, I stopped using PPC for a month or two. When I dialed up
with it last week, I suddenly got the following error message (which hasn't
appeared since):
"IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff9db61.
Registers:

I cannot load websites with IE6. Not even my own. IE6 does open HTML
files, Java, etc. on my Hard drive.

I called PPC tech support, and they had me run the IE6 self-repair (Control
Panel/Add-Remove, etc.)
IE6 cannot repar itself. Today, I tried it again, and got the following
details on the "cannot repair itself) box:
File mobsync.exe is missing.
File mobsync.dll is missing.

PPC suggests I contact the maker/installer of my PC. I had a teenager
install it with elements he got from some source. It has worked fine for 4
1/2 years.

AMD 7 Athlon, running Win98SE. ( beta tested XP on this machine, and had ME
on it for a while. I stopped Beta testing when MS decided to divide the
beta testers into Home and Professional versions)

IE6 6.0.2800.1106

I should also mention that about 4 months ago, after using Windows Update, I
suddenly lost one of the Windows fonts. It turned most of the help files
into little rectangular boxes.

I am able to use EMail and Newsgroups but have lost the sending capability
of MSN.com in email, while maintaining the ability to receive.

2 weeks ago I called MSN technical, and they set up a web-mail-on-the hard
drive for MSN which worked about a week, duplicating my regular MSN, and
cleaning itself out when I opened my regular Outlook Express. This hybrid
has the server: http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi.bin/hmdata, but did,
for that while, receive my MSN-addressed email.

I am able to access a poker site with no problems, except that the most
important on-screen instructions again appear to be needing the same font as
the Win Help file.

I think this is all. I can limp along with email, the poker, and
newsgroups, but would like to get MSN messenger back, as well as browsing.
Needless to say, I can't surf to the update sites or re-download IE6. I
have toyed with the idea of going with AOL9 for a while to see if I can
restore IE6.

I sure hope it isn't the beginning of the death of my hard drive, but I am
gradually backing up 4 years of files.

Oh, the message I get on the browser when it can't open a site is: HTTP 404
File not found.

Then, sometimes, I get the same page with suggestions for checking Internet
Options and some other ideas, none of which work.

Any help to be found here?

Is it possible my Windows Update installed a IE6 service pack for OTHER
than Win98SE? I have tried to be careful to identify the stuff I install.
Of course, I can't go to the web for help. You are my last resort, beyond a
reformat, etc.

B. You may need new video drivers. Check the site for your video board
manufacturer. Meanwhile you can do the following:
1. Use the default mouse pointers.
2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (For Win 98, Start |
Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will
see little, if any, performance degradation.
4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.

If you have an ATI video board, try adding these lines to System.ini

Thanks for the link. The problem (or the major part of it) turns out to
have been one of the helper apps.
See below.

Frank, I tried all of these, and none worked, but thank you for the
suggestions.

While waiting for a newsgroup to load, I messed around with one of the
error-message IE 6 windows, just on the odd chance that Google.com would
show somethin.

Surprise! A ZoneAlarm popup told me they had stopped my browser. What a
confession. I can't even recall when I thought I had disabled the damn
program, just on the odd chance that it was causing some freezes while I was
loading and reading newsgroups.

Anyway, I updated ZoneLabs for the firewall, and will be working on some
other minor bugs. My success with the ZoneLabs site and installation means
I am now able to surf. Thank goodness.

However, I still am missing one of MS's workaday fonts in Help and inn the
poker game on the web.

More good new: My regular MSN email now works. I had used Spybot and
Hijack this, before, (something wrong with my settings on Spybot. . .it
seems to loop endlessly, so I need to remove it and redownload it). I had
used Adaware but had dropped it when Spybot seemed so good. Maybe I will go
back to that.

Anyway, I think one needs to be cautious about trying out the helper apps,
and removing them completely may be the best option, rather than just
upgrading (which is when my Spybot started going bad).

Sure glad I asked my questions here, Frank, since your suggestions got me
back into the pattern of playing around and solving some of my problems.

Hurray for p-to-p NGs.
