ie6 won't open any sites: netscape OK

A

Alex Wilde

As subject. I had the problem many ppl seem to have had in that all web
site calls were being directed to a search engine, which also kept
changing my homepage, from black, to itself.

I seem to have stopped this from happening now, but IE won't access any
sites at all; "Page cannot be displayed"

Netscape works fine on any sites.

I've updated and run:
McAfee VirusScan
Ad-aware
Spybot - Search & Distroy
HijackThis
CWShredder
BHoDemon

None of the online parasite checks will work as they all seem to need
IE, and this I can't do. I've also run the winsock checker program that
I can't remember the name of right now, but that didn't seem to do
anything, though I admit to not knowing much about it. Windows ME is
also up-to-date, though I can't check because it doesn't work.......

Thanks for any help anybody can give.

I'll include the HijackThis log if it's any help:

Netscape works fine on any sites.

Have you tried:

using the Options, Programs tab?

and an IE Repair?

unchecking Enable third-party browser extensions...

That last item is a diagnostic. It may affect some things that you
otherwise want (such as your Google toolbar) but if it changes your
symptoms enough to allow IE to run again you will know that you
still have some incompatible third-party programs for your BHODemon
to uncover.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply.

Not sure what you mean about the first option, but I have tried the
'Reset web settings' button to no avail.

The second one I've never really understood. Should it give me an option
to repair IE when selecting IE in the 'Add/Remove programs'? I'm sure
I've seen this in this NG before, but doing the above seems to remove
the latest update (sp1?) and I can't find a 'repair' tab.

Already tried the 'Third party' option, alas, also to no avail. It does
indeed affect the Google toolbar which I'm not bothered about, but in
what way is it a diagnostic?

TIA.

What about the checkbox (as a test)?

I'm not familiar with your OS (WinME). It appears that you should be
able to do an IE Repair,

<title>KB194177 - Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool</title>

if not the normal way perhaps via the command line or Run... dialog:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

(Note: case sensitive entry point name. There is a more detailed command
given at the bottom of the article but the one I have given is usually sufficient.)

Exactly the way I described it (after the "but" where you seem to have
stopped reading.)

I've tried that, but it doesn't make any difference apart from now not
displaying the 'page cannot be displayed' error.

I've tried this and it seemed to do some fixing, but sadly the problem
still persists.

I've also finely managed to download a full version (all 79 megs) of
IE6.0 sp1 and tried reinstallation, but this was of no use either.

Some other posters on this group have hinted that this problem can be
caused by spybot. Does anybody have anymore info on this?

Which version of Netscape do you have installed?
I seem to recall seeing cases such as yours which can only be resolved
by completely uninstalling Netscape; however, I may be recollecting
cases which involve getting OE working again too.

If I'm not mistaken uninstalling Netscape can be a challenge
and special procedures, including regedits and scripts may be
required.

Not your symptom AFAIK. You might have better luck trying some
of the suggestions from poster oops!! who specializes in helping
people install IE6 into WinME. He mostly posts in ie6.setup but
occasionally does his thing in here too.

Good luck

It's version 6.1.

I've had it installed on this computer for at least a couple of years
without problems.

IE will access ftp sites without problem and will also display locally
held sites.

Cheers for your help; I'll look in on ie6.setup then.
