IE6 won't connect to internet

I have Internet Explorer 6 on a Windows 98SE machine. I can no longer use IE
for my browser, because it won't connect.

When I open IE, it says "Finding site: www.mysite.com" on the bottom, but
after a minute, I get the "This page cannot be displayed" error page. It
doesn't matter what page I try to view - the result is the same.

I switched to Mozilla Firefox, which works fine, and all of my other
internet-enabled programs work fine (Outlook Express, Norton LiveUpdate,
uTorrent, etc.).

I tried to reinstall IE 6, but it didn't help.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
~ Horatio

I forgot to mention, I also scanned for malware, using Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D,
CCleaner, Spyware Doctor, and CounterSpy, and my system was clean.

I hope you are in a dry dock. Otherwise, ensure that you are checking
the pump regularly! :)

If this works, I can't take credit for it, since MVP Frank Saunders
suggested it to me when I had the identical problem, it worked, so I'm
just passing it along.

Launch IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab. If the "Use
a proxy server for
this connection (these settings will not apply to other connections)"
box is checked, uncheck it.

Back out, clicking all the OK's, close IE, relaunch IE and try again.
May say no connection exists, just click Ignore or Try Again. Did it
work? If so, thank Frank. If not, time for a new PC?? That's my best
shot.

BTW, if this happens again, you may have an app that is checking that
box during an auto update or on reboot start-up.

Thanks for the links. I haven't had time to try them out, but I'll post
again when I do.

Launch IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab.

Whoops, I left out the final step for finding that Proxy Server check
box. When you are on the Connections page, click on the LAN SETTINGS
box, that will take you to the page where you will find the check box
for the Proxy Server. It should be unchecked. Sorry about that.
